Huge turnout for Anna in city

Close to one lakh Mumbaiites stepped out of the comfort of their homes on a rainy Sunday evening and marched nine km, from Bandra railway station to Juhu beach, protesting corruption and expressing solidarity with Anna Hazare and his fight for a stronger Jan Lokpal Bill.

While the city police claim the turnout for the rally was 80,000 to 1 lakh people, organisers, India Against Corruption, contend that more than one lakh citizens were present.

The mammoth rally took over the streets, and traffic came to a standstill as students, homemakers, activists, businessmen, professionals all marched through the western suburbs, waving the national flag, shouting slogans against corruption.

“To live a respectable life, one needs to either have influence in the government or big money, otherwise getting through your work is impossible. Even to avail our basic fundamental rights we have to bribe someone,” said Philomena Alphonso, 26, an MBA student.
