RC Saini, commander, INS Angre, who was arrested on October 5 in connection with the leaking of question paper for the Lower Division Clerk (LDC) examination has told the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials that he was taking a nap when the papers were being printed. He is in police custody till Wednesday.
Saini was also the president of the examination board constituted by the navy.
Saini’s statement contradicts the one given by RC Naik, administrative officer (AO) of the Western Naval Dockyard, who was the member of the examination board and who had stated that Saini gave him a hard copy of the question paper on his (Naik) request. Naik, who was arrested along with three others on September 26, the day the examination was to be held, had told the CBI that he asked Saini for a copy of the question paper as one of his (Naik’s) relatives was appearing for the exam.
Naik had asked for the copy while the papers were being printed at Atharva Consultancy and Allied Services, a printing press situated at Sinhagad Road, near Pune.
A CBI official said that during so far, Saini has denied permitting Naik to take a hard copy. “He told us that while the papers were being printed, he (Saini) had gone to take rest for some time and Naik was supervising the printing work,” the official said. Saini further told CBI that during this time Naik might have taken a copy of the question paper.

{{/usCountry}}However, the CBI is not buying Saini’s version and are further investigating to establish the commander’s role.
The CBI has asked for the call detail records of all the accused in the case. Besides Naik and Saini, the others who were arrested include DS Murthy, AO of Eastern Naval Dockyard, Rambir Singh Rawat, former sailor and owner of Mansa International Defence Recruitment Agency in Vishakapatnam and a Haryana-based teacher, Hoshiyar Singh Rawat.
Officials said it would take some time to get the call records because they will come from various parts of the country including Mumbai, Vishakapatnam, Haryana and Pune.
The CBI hopes to establish links between the accused from the call records.
