ICSE schools consider new evaluation system

The CCE system has already been adopted by CBSE and SSC schools since the Right To Education Act came into effect last April. The act requires the schools to evaluate students throughout the year on a variety of extra-curricular parameters instead of a single exam.

There are 69 ICSE schools in the city. Last week, around 50 ICSE school principals convened to discuss the system of evaluation. Some schools have already adopted the CCE system while others are in the process of doing so.

“It is one of the provisions in the RTE Act. So we came together to share our views on the issue,” said Perin Bagli, principal of Activity High School. She made a presentation to the other principals on the system that her school follows.

“The principals liked the system,” she said. “We are making sure that the evaluation pattern announced by the government is followed in our school”

The government order issued last August states that the CCE will be based on two term-wise assessments. Teachers will have to observe students, conduct practical exams, oral evaluations as well as surprise tests. The grading system ICSE schools are looking to adopt is the same one being followed by SSC and CBSE schools (see box).

“Principals can adopt the system however they wish to,” said the principal of a south Mumbai school. “It will also keep teachers on their toes and ensure that they complete the syllabus at the right pace.”
