‘If eateries stay open all night in Mumbai, what about women’s safety?’

A division bench of j ustice Abhay Oka and justice AK Menon directed the state to consult the justice CS Dharmadhikari committee – set up to recommend measures for the security of women – in the matter.

The Bombay high court on Thursday asked the state whether it has considered the safety of women while deciding on the policy to keep bars and pubs open all night.

Justice Oka said, “In a city like Mumbai, situations will arise.”

He said although the term of the Dharmadhikari committee has expired, it should be asked to look into the aspect of women’s safety while deciding whether eateries should stay open all night.

“The safety of women is an important aspect while considering the policy,” he said.

Justice Oka asked whether the issue has been taken into consideration and if it is not, then we will have to ‘apply our mind’ to handle such situations.
