The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) is now stepping in to help the family of their alumnus Satyam Kumar whose body was found at the bottom of a lake in Paris.
The 23-year-old was doing his masters in fluid mechanics on a scholarship at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. He disappeared on December 3 and his body was found five days later.
His parents live in Sitamarhi in Bihar and are too grief stricken about their only child to handle formalities. His relatives and friends are in Delhi trying to get the body back, but so far to no avail. IIT-B, where Satyam graduated from last year in aerospace engineering, is now getting in to help.
“We will do whatever we can to help. We will get in touch with the relevant government authorities to expedite the process,” said Jaya Joshi, public relations officer, IIT-B.
Meanwhile, the attempts of his friends have been futile so far. “We have been waiting for so many days and going from department to department. Now officials are telling us that the weekend is off so nothing can be done. After that it will take another three to four days,” said Avinash Kumar his childhood friend who is in Delhi. “It has been nine days since he passed away. His mother is in shock and has fallen ill.” Satyam’s father, Dinkar, is a primary school teacher in Sitamarhi.
There is an air of gloom in the aerospace engineering department at IIT-B. “We have been very sad since we heard the news. He was a very sincere, trustworthy and brilliant student,” said Prof. Prabhu Ramchandran, Satyam’s guide for his masters research. Satyam had been accepted at Purdue University for a funded Ph.D and he was going to the US in February. “His future was so bright. He was a quiet, reserved boy who had made it from a small town. It was a pleasure working with him. We will do whatever we can to help his family,” added Ramchandran.

Satyam had gone to the lake with his two friends from IIT Kanpur on Friday night after their exams were over to celebrate.
While his friends returned to their hostel rooms, Satyam stayed back. When they did not find him on Saturday morning, they informed the university officials and police.
