IIT-B students warned about leopard attacks

Officials have asked students of the Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay (IITB) to be careful while on the campus, on account of increased leopard sightings.

Students were sent instructions, asking them to be more vigilant while moving around in the campus, through an email recently.

“It has been reported by our patrolling guards as well as our residents that leopard movements are being observed in the Hillside/Sonari Bagh/Lakeside area,” said an email, sent to students from the security office, asking them to avoid using a specific road after sunset.

The IITB campus border abuts the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and has had leopard visits on several occasions in the past.

The institute has also decided to increase lighting facilities around the campus and has added one more watch post inside the campus. Students have also been advised to move around in groups and not be out too late at night, said U Yajnik, dean of student affairs.

However, students don’t seem to be too affected. “We keep getting such emails, no one is that worried. We are used to this by now,” a student said.
