IIT students can now move across institutes

The second round of admissions to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) this year will allow students to move across its 15 institutes, unlike last year.

The IITs instituted a second round of admissions for the first time in 2009, to fill up seats that were still vacant after the first round. So, students who were allotted a seat on the basis of their rank in the first round could upgrade their discipline if a seat was still vacant. But this was limited to the IIT the student had gained admission to.

The IITs have streamlined the system this year. For example, if a student with the rank 27 is not happy with his or her allotted seat, say in civil engineering stream in IIT Kanpur, and does not take it up, that seat will open up for students below rank 27, who had listed civil engineering in IIT Kanpur as their preference before the counselling began.

These students can then move to IIT-Kanpur from any of the other IITs. Earlier, only students of IIT-Kanpur could avail the seat.

“This will open up seats for more students and give them another chance to get into streams and institutes they had put down as their preferences,” said Gautam Barua, director, IIT-Guwahati.

“The IITs will also coordinate the second round with the results of the AIEEE (the entrance exam to the National Institutes of Technology) so that we can accommodate the seats of the students who opt for the NITs and give up their IIT seats.”

“The second round of admissions was a big relief and now that it opens across institutes, our chances increase substantially,” said Suraj Parmar, an aspirant.
