Research scholars at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) will finally be in the limelight. On November 13, IIT-B’s PhD scholars will showcase their ongoing research work to the institute’s alumni.
The last Research Scholars Confluence was held in 2008 as part of the institute’s 50-year celebrations. IIT-B now wants make it a biannual event.
"Last time, it was more out of nostalgia, but this year we want alumni to be more involved," said MC Deo, a professor from the civil engineering department, who is coordinating the event. "For the alumni, it is like a special alumni day and for researchers it’s an opportunity where we recognise their contributions."
Presently, about 1,200 of the 6,200 students on campus are PhD students. An average of 200 PhD students pass out of IIT-B every year. The institute is aiming that within the next four years, one third of the student population on campus should be research scholars.
Although there are still more than 10 days to the event, there are already 350 registrations. Of these, 150 are research alumni. Prominent research scholars such as Sunil Sherlekar, the man behind the country’s first super computer, and BARC scientist, BK Datta, will deliver lectures.
