Police officials spotted the seven-foot carcass on the beach, the forest department said.

This was the fifth such incident this year. At least 13 incidents of sea mammal deaths have been reported over the past year.

Two weeks ago, a mutilated carcass of another humpbacked dolphin was washed ashore at Gorai.

The dolphin carcass at Dana Pani did not have any wounds. It has been sent for a post-mortem.

“We request top government officials to take cognisance of the rising number of mammal deaths around Mumbai and provide amenities to carry out remedial measures,” he said.

Heavy underwater activities like earthquakes or volcanic eruptions can disturb whales and dolphins and propel their distress movement towards the coast, experts say.

Man-made conditions like a ship causing injury to whales or its wreckage or oil spills and rising noise pollution in sea are also possible reasons that causes such as distress movement.
