In pics: Drunk Mumbai lawyer rams Audi into taxi, kills two, arrested

Salim Sabuwala and his family were out on Tuesday morning, celebrating their son scoring a 90% in the SSC examination, when their lives toppled. They were returning from a dinner at the Bhiwindi hotel when lawyer Janhavi Gadkar's Audi Q3 rammed into their taxi, killing Sabuwala and the driver.

The high-profile lawyer was supposedly drunk and driving on the wrong side of the Eastern Freeway when the incident occured. “As I was drunk, I was not able to understand the road,” reads her statement to the police.

1) Gadkar and two of her colleagues went to hotel Marine Plaza on Monday night to celebrate a project their company got. They consmed alcohol there. 2) Around 10pm, they left the hotel. Gadkar stopped at a spot on Marine Drive and sat inside her car. At 12:30am, she started frving home again. 3) On entering the Eastern Freeway, Gadkar travelled on the wrong side of the road for almost 10kms and her Audi collided head-on with the taxi.

Mumbai Police officials added that just before the accident, two motorists had narrowly escaped colliding with the Audi. They were not able to stop Gadkar in time. Gadkar went on to say that she was driving at speed when, around 1 am, she rammed into a taxi headed in the opposite direction near Shivaji Nagar Masjid. (Kunal Patil/HT photo)

Gadkar was not arrested immediately at night as the law bars police authorities from taking a woman into custody at night. She was, however, arrested later in the morning. In her statement, she has said that the air bags saved her from incurring major injuries. (Kunal Patil/HT photo)
