The motorman, Shrikant Balkrishna Kotuwar 48, is a resident of railway colony in Byculla. The incident took place between Mulund and Thane railway stations around 12.30am when the train was crowded. “I came to know about the incident on the same day around 6am,” said Kotuwar’s son Shamim, who claims his father suffered injuries on his chest and is in the ICU.

Despite being injured, the motorman, Shrikant Balkrishna Kotuwar 48, allegedly drove for 500m before safely halting the train at Thane railway station.

Repair work being undertaken at Kopri flyover by the railways engineering department allegedly caused the iron sheet to break. “This could have endangered the safety of several commuters also. This work was done in haste while suburban operations were on,” said senior railway official requesting anonymity.

Here, the station manager and railway passengers came to his rescue and shifted him to Thane civil hospital and later to Byculla railway hospital.

“Railway authorities should take action against the contractor or any person who was carrying out the work because it risked the life of more than 100 people traveling in the local train that time,” claimed Shamim.

The service was later cancelled and sent to the Kalwa car shed.
