The coldest January day of all time in the island city was January 15, 1935 when the mercury dipped to 11.7 degree Celsius. On Monday, the minimum temperature recorded was six degrees below normal.

"At times, western disturbances result in a north-westerly wind as opposed to the usual north-easterly wind. This has led to a dip in temperature at Colaba. In the suburbs, we expect the temperature to be in the range of 12 to 14 degree Celsius in the next two days and then subsequently climb back to normal," said VK Rajeev director, western region, India Meteorological Department.

The Santacruz weather station, meanwhile, recorded a minimum temperature of 13.5 degree Celsius, which was three degrees below normal. On Sunday, the suburbs witnessed their coldest day in January in a decade with the mercury dipping to 10 degree Celsius.
