Japan embassy offers help with printing exam papers

Japanese consulate general offers help to the state board after HSC students face complained they had problems reading the question paper

After reading the Hindustan Times report on Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) students finding it impossible to read parts of the handwritten and photocopied Japanese question paper on Wednesday , the Japanese consulate general has offered to help the state education board in printing the question papers.

Students had complained that they were unable to read the question paper. The board has been providing photocopied question papers to students for this subject as only a few students opt for it, and typing distorts Japanese fonts.

After reading about the problems faced by students, consul-general Yoshiaki Ito wrote to Hindustan Times, on Friday, saying they will help the board so that the students do not face any problems in future.

“I read an article in today’s newspaper titled - Japanese exam paper was not readable, claim HSC students. I am very much concerned about the students who had to face this unexpected situation and were unnecessarily disadvantaged while appearing for the HSC examination in Japanese this year,” read the letter.

Later, in a telephonic conversation, Ito told Hindustan Times , “We have a computer which can print in Japanese. Neutrality and confidentiality can be maintained. This is our goodwill offer.”

Ito added that he was also planning to visit the board head quarters in Pune. “I need to discuss with the board. I have asked my staff to contact the concerned officials in the board, I am even thinking of going to Pune in the near future,” said Ito.

The education board has not spoken to Ito yet, but on Thursday, Gangadhar Mhamane, chairperson of the board had said that he had asked for a copy of question paper and found it to be clear.
