Alleging negligence of the doctors, relatives of the deceased, Rais Khan, tried to manhandle resident doctor Mukhtar Deshmukh (35).

But thanks to the newly installed Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) in the hospital wards, security guards immediately rushed to the spot and prevented further assault.

One relative, Anees Haneef Khan (23), was handed over to JJ Marg police. Rais, a resident of Kela Bazaar in Nagpada, was rushed to the hospital around 1.45 am on Monday after he complained of chest pain.

“The patient had a history of cardiac problem and diabetes,” said Dr H.H. Jadhav, superintendent of JJ Hospital.

“He was admitted in a very critical condition and died within 10 minutes.”

According to the JJ Marg police, they arrested a person for allegedly threatening a doctor after his relative died.

“We arrested relative Anees on charges of threatening and assaulting a government officer,” said K. Patil, senior police inspector of JJ Marg police station.

Meanwhile, the resident doctors are angry over the attacks and lack of security in hospitals. “We are giving a month’s time to fix the problem of patient’s relatives attacking doctors. Else we would have to go on strike,” said Rahul Pedawad, secretary Maharshtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD).

The state government had constituted a six-member committee to look into the security arrangements in 14 of its hospitals in the state after relatives of a dead patient allegedly attacked doctors at JJ Hospital early this year.
