Project-affected persons (PAPs) of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) will be allotted 12.5% of the developed land, the Union Government announced on Thursday.

Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, who had promised that the issue of the demand for compensatory land would be resolved within three months after a total bandh at JNPT in March this year, has welcomed the Centre’s decision. Some 3,000 workers of JNPT had supported the bandh by going on strike at the time.
The PAPs wanted developed land in lieu of their ancestral plots acquired by the union shipping ministry for developing the port. The PAPs had started their struggle from 1984. JNPT is the lifeline port because it accounts for 60% of India’s container cargo.
The chief minister’s office said in a statement that the Centre would give 11 hectares of land to the City and Industrial Development Corporation for allotment to PAPs.
While the Centre will bear the cost of providing adequate infrastructure to landowners, the state government will execute the development plan.
