Khar police arrest chain-snatcher

Two Khar police constables chased Ashraf Ali Khan (27) on Thursday for allegedly snatching a mangalsutra from the personal assistant of a senior official with the home department. She was walking across the junction of Kherwadi area in Bandra (E), when the incident occurred. The accused snatched the mangalsutra and fled in an autorickshaw.

According to the police, the victim managed to note the autorickshaw’s number and informed the Kherwadi police. The police officials then circulated the vehicle number on the wireless.

Anil Tadvi and Sunil Mane- two police beat marshals with Khar police station - on night duty picked up the wireless message. “These constables saw an autorickshaw speeding near the National college lane. They realized that its number plate was the same as the one being flashed on the wireless,” said senior police inspector Mangesh Kote of Khar police station. The two constables then chased the auto rickshaw.

Ashraf, who is a professional chain-snatcher with over 25 cases registered against him, jumped out of the auto and tried to run. However, the two constables managed to overpower him. “While being overpowered, the accused assaulted Tadvi, injuring him,” added Kote.
