On Tuesday, St Jude’s school agreed to bring down its hiked fee from Rs 650 to Rs 525 after a meeting between the school management, education department officials and parents of students.

In April, the school announced it would be hiking its fee from Rs 450 to Rs 650.

“We have been fighting against the fee hike for a long time, so we were relieved to arrive at a compromise,” said Santosh Pawar, a member of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association. “So far the school has been hiking the fees annually by 10 per cent, so the 45 per cent increase was too much.”

Last month, the high court had set aside government resolutions regulating fee hikes in private, unaided schools, ruling that the government would only be able to do so after bringing in an act.
