Labourer crushed under crane's tyre

A 21-year-old labourer working at a monorail construction site in Agripada was crushed to death after he came under a moving crane on Friday morning.

A 21-year-old labourer working at a monorail construction site in Agripada was crushed to death after he came under a moving crane on Friday morning. The Agripada police said that Mohammad Hamid Aalam was walking with the crane to assist shifting of a concreting funnel when his footwear got stuck under the crane's tyre, and he was crushed while trying to pull it out. The incident took place at 11.15 am when Aalam was working at the monorail site near Jacob Circle.

"The crane was transporting a concreting funnel from Sane Guruji Marg to the area outside Arthur Road prison. As a precaution, around five labourers were supporting the funnel to stop it from wiggling and hitting anybody. But Aalam's footwear got stuck in the tyre and when he bent to pull it out, he was pulled under the tyre, leading to his death," said Kishore Baviskar, senior inspector, Agripada police.

Other labourers rushed Aalam to Nair Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival, police said. Police are trying to trace the crane's driver, Shatrughan Prasad, who is on the run.

Officials said the crane belongs to J Kumar Infraprojects, a sub-contractor for the Chembur-Jacob Circle monorail project. Despite various attempts, no one from the company could be reached for the comment. Aalam had been working with the company for three months.

Aalam's body has been handed over to his brother, who also works as a labourer with the same company at the project's Wadala site.
