Veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar fell prey to an internet hoax on Thursday as rumours of her death spread through social networking sites. Hundreds of fans sent out rest-in-peace tweets without any confirmation of the news.

The rumours were finally laid to rest by the 82-year-old singer herself, who sent out a tweet shortly before midnight on Thursday. “Namaskar. Please don't believe any rumors, which are doing the rounds about my health and well-being. All is well, by the grace of God,” Mangeshkar tweeted.
At around the same time, film-maker Madhur Bhandarkar also tweeted that the news was untrue. “Stop this baseless rumour. Lata didi is absolutely fine and kicking. I just spoke to her (sic),” Bhandarkar assured.
While there is no confirmation about the source of the rumour, it is said to have spread rapidly through the Blackberry Messenger (BBM) service before it was picked up by social media.
