The Andheri police arrested a laundry man for robbing ornaments worth Rs 1.8 lakh after threatening and gagging a 71-year-old retired LIC agent on Friday.

The shirt that the accused had left behind in the laundry where he worked helped the police to trace him.

Ramkrishna Swaminathan, a resident of JB Nagar in Andheri (East), was at home with his wife when Sanjeev Chaudhary, 22, who worked at Rohit Power Laundry, knocked on the door.

He had been working at the laundry for 15 days.

Chaudhary gagged Swaminathan and then threatened his wife with a toy gun and a knife. Swaminathan’s wife handed him the gold ornaments that she was wearing. Chaudhary then locked the couple in the bathroom and escaped.

By the time the couple shouted for help from the bathroom window, Chaudhary had fled with the valuables, the police said. A case was registered against Chaudhary with the Andheri police. During interrogations, the police found a shirt from the laundry shop where he was working.

The ornaments have been recovered from Chaudhary.
