Less than 1% of schools in rural Maharashtra could get an A grade in the evaluation drive conducted by the state government over the past few months.

Of the 61,833 schools, nearly 10,000 had less than 60% marks in the evaluation.

Of over one lakh primary and secondary schools, 61,833 are governed by the rural development department ( RDD) through zilla parishads, the district- l evel civic bodies.

In January t his year, RDD launched a drive to evaluate schools under various parameters.

The results they received recently were not satisfactory.

Only 541 schools or 0.87% of the schools evaluated got grade A or marks above 90%.

Only 6,248 or 10.10% of the schools scaled between 80 and 90%, while maximum number – 45,101 schools – received the C grade with marks between 60 and 80%.

Rest of the schools were g raded with D and E scales.

The schools were evaluated with 200 marks, of which 100 marks were for academic standards, while 75 marks were for the school management.

“Only 11% schools could get above 80% marks. We have made it compulsory to display the grade in the front of the school so t hat parents are aware about the quality of education their children are pursuing. Our aim is to upgrade all the schools and ensure that they get A or B grades in the next two years,” he said.

“Many schools have formed committees to chalk out the measures to ensure the schools’ upgrade. We expect parents, elected re presentatives to participate and chip in for the improvement of quality,” he added.
