Lilavati CEO passes away

Vijay Mehta, the Chief Executive Officer of Bandra's Lilavati Hospital, died of heart failure around 11 am on Saturday, barely a day after his son and managing trustee Niket was allegedly attacked by the supporters of another trustee and his cousin Chetan.

The family has been embroiled in a legal battle for control of the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust that runs the posh hospital.

Vijay (79), who had been suffering from heart disease for the past eight years, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Lilavati two months ago, said a family friend.
Last September, Vijay's elder son Miten (54) had jumped to death from the family's ninth floor home in Cuffe Parade.

"It is with great sadness that I am informing you of the demise of my father Mr. Vijaybhai K. Mehta today at Lilavati Hospital," read a statement issued by Niket on Saturday.

"The wisdom and greatness of soul prevailed in a harmonious and unified family for Vijaybhai," the statement added.

On Friday, Niket had filed a police case of rioting against Chetan. This complaint came a day after Niket, who is managing trustee of Lilavati, disqualified his paternal uncle and Chetan's father Prabodh Mehta as one of the trustees citing a Belgium court order that convicted him for forgery.

A family friend said Niket had suffered a "serious head injury" during the attack on Friday and had been kept in the ICU for observation on Friday night.
