Mahajan family feud flares up

The Mahajan family saga took another turn with Prakash Mahajan, the only surviving Mahajan brother, sending a legal notice to the family of the late Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pramod Mahajan claiming stake in an ancestral land in Osmanabad.

The fight is over 3.5-4 acres of land at Osmanabad, which was owned by the Mahajan family patriarch, the late Venkatesh Mahajan. However, this land was handed over by Pramod during his lifetime to the Tapasvi Charitable Trust, which is run by Pramod Mahajan's family members including his wife Rekha Mahajan.

Subsequently, a medical college in the name of Venkatesh Mahajan was set up on the land. Prakash was made chairman of the trust. Pramod's daughter Poonam Mahajan subsequently took his place.

Prakash claims that because it was ancestral land, he had asked Pramod Mahajan to distribute the family property amongst the siblings but the distribution never took place.

“Pramodji handed over the property to Tapaswi Public Charitable Trust in 2003, without consulting anyone in the family," Prakash said.

“Being the eldest of the family, I never got the respect I deserved from my brother’s (Pramod) family,” Mahajan said.

Poonam, who is not in the city, was unavailable for comment.
