Mahim collapse: BMC acts against 5 officials

The BMC has also annou-nced that residents of private buildings that are more than 30 years old will be prosecuted if they don’t submit the structural audit report of their buildings to ward offices.

While three officials, then engineers in G-north ward’s buildings and factories department — Digambar Satam, Chan-drakant Shende and Pravin Rane — will be suspended, retired ward officer Narayan Pai and an executive engineer, Chitore, will face inquiry.

“After the complaints were submitted, ward officials should have inspected the building and taken action. I have ordered the suspension of officials involved for negligence,” said civic chief Sitaram Kunte.

Merchant had handed over copies of letters sent to officials since 2008 that complained of structural changes made in the basement.
