At 7.30 am, one of the three cloth-processing machines on the ground-floor shed of the mill caught fire after it malfunctioned, said Chief Fire Officer Uday Tatkare.

“The fire occurred when some workers were preparing to start the machines. It spread rapidly as boilers and ruptured pipelines leaking oil were in the vicinity,” said Tatkare.

Around 40 people, including workers, were present on the premises at the time of the incident but they all managed to get out safely.

About eight fire engines, four jumbo tankers and three water tankers were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze, which took three hours.

The fire brigade has, on the basis of prima facie evidence, ruled out foul play.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Dadar Division), Madhukar Sankhe said: “We have not registered any case yet. In case, there are indications of any foul play that led to the fire, we will do so register a case. Investigations are on.”
