He was earlier booked under section 304 (A) of the IPC that stands for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Section 304 (II) attracts a maximum imprisonment for 10 years as against a maximum sentence of two years under section 304 (A) that was applied earlier. Also while 304 (II) is a non-bailable offence triable in the Sessions court, 304 (A) is a bailable offence that can be tried by a magistrates court. The court remanded Chavan to the custody of Bhoiwada police till April 24.

Meanwhile the Bhoiwada police investigating the death of Julie, a commercial sex worker, who fell off the second floor of a building located inside the railway quarters in Parel on Thursday night while escaping, said that neighbours of Surendra Chavan alerted his wife about him having called over a commercial sex worker.
