Ravikumar Arrsan, an employee of JNPT in Vashi, got angry after his father, Ramlingam (57), returned home drunk at 3.30 am.

An argument broke out and Ramlingam started abusing and assaulting the family members. “They soon started fighting,” said Laxman Naidu, a neighbour.

Ramlingam, in a fit of rage, picked up a grinding stone and came towards Ravikumar, who pushed him in defence. The stone fell on Ramlingam, injuring him grievously. Neighbours rushed him to a hospital but was declared dead before admission. Arrsan, who was injured in the scuffle, surrendered himself at the Vikhroli police station.

The police said Ramlingan, who was unemployed for more than 15 years, was an alcoholic, Ravikumar, who has a 18-month child, was the only bread earner in the family.

Inspector D. Thorat said: “We are investigating the case.”
