In a case of mistaken identity, a 25-year-old woman was brutally stabbed near a police post close to Dadar railway station, one of the busiest places in the heart of the city, on Monday.

In a case of mistaken identity, a 25-year-old woman was brutally stabbed near a police post close to Dadar railway station, one of the busiest places in the heart of the city, on Monday.

The police said the victim Sonal S Lapashiya, a student of chartered accountancy, was walking to a bus stop when farmer Vijay Sangelkar, 35, attacked her with a sickle in full public view at 9am.

Lapashiya was repeatedly stabbed in front of many passengers at the bus stop. Only when the victim’s scarf fell off her face did the attacker realise she wasn’t his wife.

A profusely bleeding Lapashiya sustained injuries on her wrist and face and was rushed to Sion Hospital and later to Bombay Hospital.

As people stood around and watched, Sangelkar, fearing an assault from the public, dropped his weapon and stood numb.

As soon as he dropped his weapon, an irate mob thrashed him before the police arrived to whisk him away.
