Man nabbed for cheating Tanzanian couple

A hotel manager, on his way to Abu Dabhi, was nabbed at the Mumbai international airport on Monday night for a crime he allegedly committed six years ago.

An officer from the Shivaji Park police station said that the 40-year-old Nadeem Jafri was employed at a Dadar hotel as a manager in 2005. When a Tanzanian couple staying at the hotel asked him about foreign exchange conversion services nearby, Jafri offered to help.

“The couple gave him $300 twice, which he duly exchanged for Indian currency,” said sub-inspector SS Yadav of Shivaji Park police station.

“The couple, started trusting Jafri and gave him another $1300 for conversion. This time, Jafri fled with the money." He added, “When he did not return for a few days, the couple filed a complaint.”

“We went to the Kandivli address he provided while seeking employment and learnt that Jafri was staying on rent and had vacated the place a few days ago.” At Jafri’s workplace, police came across a photocopy of the passport he had submitted.

His details were shared with the Special Branch of Mumbai Police to foil any attempt to leave the country. The police, however, were unable to find any more leads and the trail went cold.
