Senior inspector ZM Gharal of Marine Drive police station, said, “Godane, who works as a reporter at a small-time newspaper, came to Mantralaya around 9.30am on Monday, with a bottle of kerosene that he poured over himself. However, two lady constables passing by spotted Godane as he was about to light a matchstick and set himself afire,” Gharal said. They alerted security staff who overpowered Godane and handed him over to the local Marine Drive police station.

“A case of attempt to commit suicide was registered against Godane following which we arrested him,” he added. Police have not yet ascertained what harassment he suffered, and Godane will be presented before the Esplanade court on Tuesday.
