This Ganesh festival, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will use mandals to create awareness about vasectomy, female foeticide and safe sex.

The officers of the heath department will be distributing banners, hoardings and pamphlets on the issues to be put up by the mandals. Dr Asha Advani, special officer, family welfare department, said, “We are going to take help of mandals such as the Lalbaugcha Raja where the footfalls are high.” The hoardings will warn people against going for sex determination tests and the punishment for undergoing a pre-natal sex determination test.
Recently, the mandals pledged to promote the no-tobacco campaign and have stopped accepting funding through advertisements of companies selling tobacco. Doctors from the Mumbai District Aids Control society have roped in students from over 100 colleges to execute the HIV awareness programme at the mandals.
