With Shwaas and more recently Harishchandrachi Factory, which went to the Oscars as India’s official entries, patrons of Marathi cinema are noticing a surge in new talent and new perspective in the field.

To encourage this ‘new turn’ of events, the National Centre for Performing Arts, Nariman Point has organised a Marathi Film Festival, which started on Saturday and will continue till October 13, and showcase some of the best of this year’s Marathi cinema.

“The festival displays a cross section of genres through current marathi films right from commercial films to those that talk about the history of the city to women’s issues. All of them are directed by new directors and have an interesting take on the issues,” said Deepa Gahlot, head of programming for NCPA.
