To curb the menace of fake marksheets, the University of Mumbai will now put photographs of students on their final year statement of marks. So marksheets will soon sport the student’s mug-shot.

“By incorporating photographs on the marks statement, we will ensure transparency. It will also be easy to verify that the holder of the marksheet is indeed the one seeking a job, or applying for further studies,” said controller of examinations Vilas Shinde.

The system has already begun in certain courses. For example, about 4,000 students of Master of Management Studies (semester IV) will receive marksheets with their photos. The feature will be introduced in more subjects when the results of the exams in the second half of 2010 are out.

“We hope to have photos of students on all marksheets awarded by the university, irrespective of the subjects, by 2011,” added Shinde.

The main reason for these changes is security. Two months ago the about 627 people were booked for fake marksheets after the university filed complaints against them.

The university has also opted for a rainbow colour scheme for marksheets

“The earlier plain marksheets lacked security codes. The new seven-colour scheme is unique to the Mumbai University. We have introduced seven security measures into the marksheet,” said Shinde.
