On Thursday, five people died and 26 others were injured after part of the ground-plus-one building collapsed due to a cylinder blast in a scrap shop on the ground floor of the building.

“Residents of the buildings more than 100 metres in the north and south felt the vibrations immediately after the blast.

We will survey the buildings close to Dwarkadas building,” said B. P. Shirwalkar, executive engineer (Mhada).
Built before 1940, Dwarkadas is a cessed building that falls under the Mhada’s jurisdiction.

The building was repaired four years ago.

More than 16,000 cessed buildings in south Mumbai are in a dilapidated condition.

“The visible survey has started with the help of civil engineers and each building will be screened,” said Mhada official on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to talk to the media.
