Mismatch between students’ skills, country’s needs: Prez

“There is a mismatch between the skills that our graduates possess and talents that are needed in the country, which is leading to low employability of our higher education graduates. This needs to be corrected,” President Pratibha Patil said on Tuesday.

Principal Suhas Pednekar said the college is looking ahead to autonomy and possibly even a future as an independent university. Ruia college has already applied for autonomy from Mumbai University. “After autonomy, we must think of becoming an independent entity,” Pednekar said, while referring to the pending self-financing universities’ bill, which may make such a prospect possible.

The college’s anniversary celebration function was presided over by President Pratibha Patil. Also present were chief minister Prithiviraj Chavan, governor K Sankaranarayanan and speaker of the state assembly Dilip Walse Patil.

The institute also released a coffee table book, with a history of the college told through photos from the 1930s until today.

Dilip Walse Patil, an alumnus of the college, said, “What I learnt from teachers and peers here made me who I am today. I am indebted to this institution.”
