A 35-year-old moneylender was found murdered at his Dhobi Talao office on Tuesday afternoon. Cash and jewellery totalling Rs 11 lakh was also found missing.

The Azad Maidan police said Alpesh Jain, who also used to trade in gold, was hit by a heavy blunt object on the back oh his head.

Jain and his two brothers, Bharat and Jeetu, used to manage the business, the police said.

On Tuesday afternoon, the two brothers had gone out and Alpesh was alone in the office. Around 2 pm, Jain’s wife, Smita, phoned him to ask him to come home for lunch. When Jain did not answer the phone, she went to the shop to check on him.

“Smita found Jain tied to the chair with his mouth gagged and a bloody spanner lying nearby,” said an officer from the Azad Maidan police station, requesting anonymity.

The police found Rs 3 lakh in cash and jewellery valued at Rs 8 lakh missing from the office.

“The neighbours suspect that the murder might have been committed by someone known to the victim as the Jain brothers never opened the main doors to anyone unless he or she was known to them. This was done as a security measure as they used to conduct transactions involving large amounts,” the officer added.
