According to officials from the India Meterological Department, monsoon has started withdrawing from the North – north Gujarat and north west Rajasthan. “Now that it has started withdrawing, it will recede faster for Mumbai too,” said RV Sharma, deputy director general, western region, IMD.

He added it would start withdrawing by October 10.

Till then, the humidity levels will be very high at about 80 per cent, predicted weathermen, which has to come down to 20 per cent for monsoon to start receding. For the past last few days, the maximum temperature in the city has been 35.6 degree Celsius, quite high for the month of September. It’s not very far from the highest temperature of 36.4 degree Celsius recorded for Mumbai in 1972.

“The wind over the city is coming from land north east parts of the state which is why it’s hot,” said Sharma.
For the last 24 hours, there has been an average of 1mm rainfall in the city.

Weathermen have predicted one or two spells of rain or thundershowers on Wednesday.
