Colleges across the city received the marksheets for the Mumbai University’s fifth semester Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) examinations on Tuesday and were shocked to find out that some of their toppers have failed in one subject—Financial Management (FM).
Many principals highlighted that some of their students who have scored above 70 in the remaining five subjects have failed in this particular subject, therefore leading to question the assessment and result altogether.
“Only ten students in my batch failed, and a closer look into the result shows how they have all failed in the same subject, which is surprising because otherwise, they have scored O Grade (above 70) in rest of the subjects,” said the principal of a south Mumbai college. She added that the students have decided to apply for re-evaluation of this same paper, but are worried the result for the same will not be out in time to save them from re-examination in April. “Even the re-evaluation process takes more than two months. Students are really worried,” she added.
At St Andrew’s College, 23 students have failed in FM, which is similar to last year. “The problem is that last year all those who failed in the subject had applied for re-evaluation and later found out that all, except two, had in fact passed the paper. If this is an error in either assessment or counting of marks, then it is unnecessary stress for students,” said Marie Fernandes, principal of the college. At HR College as well there have been failures in the same subject and the college authorities are trying to contact university officials in the examination committee to find out if there has been any error.

{{/usCountry}}Sixth semester examinations for the same batch should begin in the month of April and students are now confused if they should wait for re-evaluation results or apply for re-examination. “I know of my seniors who have applied for re-evaluation as well as re-examination and after appearing for the paper again, they found out that they had passed the paper in the first attempt itself. This is unfair to us students,” said Akriti Singh, a TYBMS student.
While controller of examination, MU, Deepak Vasawe was not reachable for a comment on this issue, an official from the examination committee stated that many complaints have been received about errors in the BMS result, and applications for re-evaluations too have started pouring in.
