Mudslides disrupt Konkan rail services

A boulder fell on the track at Talgaon at 3.30am on Friday, due to which three trains towards Madgaon and six trains towards Mumbai were cancelled.

Five trains towards Mumbai were diverted. Around 50 buses including private and state transport buses were hired to transship passengers of these trains. Food and water facilities were provided by the Konkan Railway.

This is the fourth time the Konkan railway services have been disrupted this monsoon. A retaining wall collapsed between Ratnagiri and Nivsar in June, which recurred on Sunday night and was restored on Thursday.

Last Sunday, mud and boulders fallen on the tracks blocked the same section's stretch route at Talgaon between Sindhudurg and Kudal. Five trains were cancelled and few others diverted on Sunday. However, the services resumed at 5pm the same day after the debris was cleared.

"We have a video surveillance in place at the site with the help of web-cameras due to which we keep a check on the progress of the work," added Telugu.

Konkan railway corporation limited had promised of being prepared for the monsoons claiming they had spent Rs25 crore on geo-safety work such as putting steel fence on the hills and retention walls along the tracks on the entire stretch.
