In a classic case of lack of coordination between government agencies in taking up infrastructure projects, the ambitious multi modal corridor running between Virar and Alibaug has hit a stumbling block after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) found that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is planning a similar road on that stretch.

The NHAI has plans of building a road project connecting Dahanu and Ravas. This road will cover a small distance of the 140-km corridor.

MMRDA officials said that if the project is undertaken, it will affect the viability of the corridor.

“If NHAI constructs a road project somewhere in the alignment of the corridor, it will hamper the financial viability of our project,” a senior MMRDA official said, requesting anonymity.

Once completed, it will mean that people heading to Alibaug could sit in an air- conditioned Metro car from Virar and cover 140 km in 75 minutes.

MMRDA had recently appointed consultant, Louis Berger, to check out the financial viability of the project.

MMRDA officials are now in talks with officials from the NHAI to ask them not to take up the project.
