A 26-year-old advocate, who was being stalked and harassed by a 44-year-old man over several months, got him arrested after taking a photograph of him making obscene gestures at her.
The accused, Dinesh Govind, works as a cleaner and lives in a slum at Badhwar Park, Cuffe Parade.
The woman told the police that he would routinely follow her and make obscene gestures. Tired of the harassment, the woman decided to capture it on camera and then approached the police with the photographs, making it easy for them to identify and arrest him.
The police said the woman first noticed him following her a few months back, when she came out for a morning walk. “He regularly stalked her in July. After a brief gap, the stalking resumed in September. But this time, he also started making obscene gestures at her,” said an officer from the Cuffe Parade police station.
The advocate was frightened, but decided to teach the man a lesson, she told the police. “Recently, she saw the man following her again. When she saw him making obscene gestures, she caught him in the act using her mobile phone,” said a sub-inspector of the Cuffe Parade police station. The woman then told Govind that she would hand the photos over to the police.

{{/usCountry}}Hearing this, he fled from the spot. The woman then approached the Cuffe Parade police with the pictures and registered a complaint. Using the photos, the police traced the accused, who was later identified as Govind. He was found close to the Badhwar Park area.
He was arrested on Saturday. The police have booked Govind under sections 354D (stalking) and 509 (word, gesture intended to outrage the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.
