Five hours of mega block, along with a technical snag on a CST-bound Khopoli fast local near Mulund station in the evening, gave Central Railway (CR) commuters a tough time on Sunday.
The CR had scheduled five-hour mega blocks between Kalyan and Thane stations on the main line and CST-Kurla and Wadala-Andheri route on the harbour line from 11am. While the block was to get over at 4pm, the Khopoli train developed a technical problem at 4.20pm.
Consequently, the fast trains got diverted on the slow track, delaying the services that were stuck because of mega block even further. Several commuters were forced to walk along the tracks. Overcrowded stations, unscheduled arrival of trains and absence of announcements made matters worse.
A CR spokesperson said the south-bound fast track was cleared after moving the train at 5.10pm. “It was cancelled at Kurla and taken to the Byculla siding yard. The services were running 10-15 minutes behind schedule,” he said.
Sources said several services were delayed, diverted and cancelled owing to the glitch in the evening. The CR, however, did not give the exact number of cancellations. Siddhi Ghogare, a Navi Mumbai resident, said boarding a train from Kurla station was a hassle. “There was no place to stand on the platform. The train, too, was overcrowded,” she said.
