The police stated that the driver, identified as Bansilal Joshi, 55, who works for a private firm, was behind the wheel and that he fled from the spot as he panicked after he realised the gravity of the carnage.

"We are in the process of recording a detailed statement based on the sequence of incidents that unfolded following the accident around 1.30am (on Sunday). Following this, we will confirm whether his claims are true and if he was indeed at the spot," he said a senior police officer.

The police have meanwhile recorded statements of at least eight other persons, including five victims, who sustained minor injuries. Citing procedural reasons, the officials refused to divulge any names. "We are investigating the case and as a part of it, statements are being recorded," confirmed Sandeep Bhagadikar, inspector of Gamdevi police.

‘Driver was in his 20s’

Contrary to police claims that a 55-year-old man was driving the Aston Martin, a 25-year-old woman, who was driving the Audi that was hit in the accident, said the Aston Martin driver was in his twenties. The woman, a college student, said the car was going at such a high speed that it continued to travel on three wheels before stopping near Cadbury junction.

In her statement, Foram Ruparel, a Ghatkopar resident, said she was travelling in the Audi with three of her friends, when she saw the Aston Martin coming towards her car from behind at great speed.

“In the rear view mirror I saw a man at the wheel,” Ruparel said. However, because of the distance between their cars, Ruparel could not see the face of the person who got out and fled, she told the police.
