Mumbai: Refused divorce, man sprays pesticide into wife’s mouth

The police have also booked the father and aunt of the accused for abetting the crime. The victim is currently undergoing treatment at KEM hospital in Parel.

The accused has been identified as Sandesh Hadye, a resident of Tavaripada in Lalbaug. Hadye and Sarika, 32, had married after a brief relationship.

However, Hadye’s family was not in favour of the marriage as Sarika belonged to a different caste. As a result, even after the marriage, she was living separately in a Prabhadevi house and Hadye would visit her.

In her complaint to the police, Sarika stated that whenever she visited Hadye’s home, his father Ramesh, 67, and aunt would argue with her and insist that she divorce him.

“Hadye had called a meeting on Saturday at his Lalbaug residence to sort out these issues. Sarika reached and began talking to her husband’s father and aunt,” said an officer from the Kalachowky police station.

“Hadye pushed Sarika onto the sofa and held her hands together with the help of his aunt. He then forcefully opened Sarika’s mouth and sprayed a pesticide in her mouth,” the officer added. Sarika somehow managed to free herself from their grasp and rushed to KEM hospital. The hospital authorities informed the police about the incident, who later recorded her statement.

A police complaint was then registered against Hadye, his father and aunt. Hayde was arrested late on Saturday night and investigators seized a bottle of pesticide from his house.

The three accused have been booked under sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach), 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
