On Monday, hot winds over the city pushed the maximum temperatures to 38.3 degrees Celsius, which is five degrees above normal. This is also the warmest temperature recorded for the month since 2008.

The minimum temperature was also two degrees above normal at 20.6 degree Celsius.

Weathermen said this was not unusual. “The south easterly dry winds that have led to a sudden spurt in temperatures in Sangli and Satara have also been over Mumbai,” said R V Sharma, deputy director general, western region, India Meteorological Department.

IMD officials said lack of sea breeze over the city for the last two days was also to blame.
