Mumbai to get 3 women’s colleges, 2 night colleges

The city will get three new women’s colleges and two night colleges in the next academic year, according to the new perspective plan by the University of Mumbai (MU).

The move is in accordance with the policy framework prepared by the state-level committee under economist Narendra Jadhav.

The committee had advocated extending educational opportunities to women and working population in urban areas. Anil Patil, director of Board of College and University Development (BCUD), which created the plan, said. “The plan reflects the guidelines provided by Narendra Jadhav committee.”

Answering the long-standing demand of student groups, the varsity is also looking to add four law colleges in Mumbai - one in eastern suburbs, one in western suburbs, two in island city including one reserved for women. The city will also get a general arts-science-commerce college, a b-school, a fine arts institute, an architecture college and a B.Ed. college.

However, with a number of seats lying vacant in the professional colleges, no new engineering or pharmacy institute will be permitted in the city in 2016-17. “There exists a large gap between the intake capacity and actual enrolment in professional institutes”, the Jadhav committee report had noted. The varsity, nevertheless, will allow a new engineering college and a pharmacy college in each of the four districts of Konkan region.
