Mumbai: Two youngsters drown off Aksa beach, 1 missing

A visit to the beach ended tragically for a group of five, after two youngsters drowned off Aksa beach in Malad (west) on Monday afternoon.

A visit to the beach ended tragically for a group of five, after two youngsters drowned off Aksa beach in Malad (west) on Monday afternoon.

The lifeguards rescued one woman, while search operations are on for the fourth victim.

The incident took place around 3.30 pm when four members of the group, including two women, went for a swim.

Lifeguards said there was a high tide at the time. Within minutes, the four started to call out for calling for help as they struggled to stay afloat, according to eyewitnesses.

Hearing the victims’ cries, the lifeguards dived into the sea and the fire department was alerted.

The rescue team pulled out Deepshika Gupta, 20, Monika Fernandez, 21, and Hemant Sharma, 22.

“While Gupta and Sharma were declared dead, Fernandez was shifted to INS Hamla Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment,” said Dhananjay Kulkarni, deputy commissioner of police and Mumbai police spokesperson.

Another member of the group, Shekhar Gaikwad, 22, was missing till late evening.
