Mankeshwar, who has suffered severe head injuries, is critical. A part of his head has been smashed, and doctors said his brain could be seen when he was brought to the hospital.

Rinku, a homemeker, married Mankeshwar two years ago. The couple has a one-year-old daughter, Soni, who is waiting it out at the hospital with her mother.

For the past 12 hours, Rinku has not eaten anything. “I am finding it difficult to even drink water. Let him get better first,” she said.

A native of Uttar Pradesh, Mankeshwar is a carpenter and moved to Mumbai four years ago. He lives with his family in a rented house in Sion.

On Wednesday, he had gone to the Dadar market to order plywood. He had planned to take Soni with him, but his neighbour Yashodha Shyamsunder stopped him. “I told him to leave Soni with me,” she said. “The criminals behind this blast will rot in hell. What have they achieved by killing innocent people?”
