The assessment report of the University of Mumbai, which is needed to initiate the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) grade, will be ready in three months.

A day after HT reported that the university’s NAAC accreditation lapsed three years ago and the university has not yet initiated the re-application process, V.N Magare, who coordinates the NAAC committee, said that they have collated data for the assessment report.
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), set up by the University Grants Commission, is a body that grades an educational institution based on faculty, infrastructure and other parameters. A NAAC accreditation increases the prestige of an institution and is now being prescribed as the standard in institutions across India. In fact, in a recent amendment to qualifications of members of university administrative bodies, the state has said that only colleges and faculty from accredited colleges will be allowed to be part of these bodies.
“Mumbai University is the largest university in the state with 57 departments. To collect factual data meant for the detailed report will take time. We have got all the data and just need to compile the report, which should be done in the next three months,” said Magare. “Getting NAAC accreditation is a voluntary activity, which is of course important for an institution,” he added.
