Nature groups organise more workshops, activities

Increasing interest in nature and history are prompting parents to enrol their children for nature camps or simply take them to the museum. This has driven both private and government bodies to introduce new activities and workshops on nature, science and history, free of cost or for a minimal fee. Nidhi Varma reports.

Increasing interest in nature and history are prompting parents to enrol their children for nature camps or simply take them to the museum. This has driven both private and government bodies to introduce new activities and workshops on nature, science and history, free of cost or for a minimal fee.

"I wanted my four-year-old daughter to learn new things. The trip was a success as she had many questions to ask," said Gauri Dhedia, a Borivli resident who took her daughter Rea to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum last month.

Over the last six years, the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum (BDLM), Nehru Planetarium and Nehru Science Centre have introduced more activities for students across all age groups, especially during vacations.

Amandeep Kaur, education officer, BNHS Conservation Education Centre (CEC), said: "More people are showing interest in nature, not only in animals but also birds and habitat ranges." Every weekend, BNHS CEC organises two to three nature trails. Instead of three nature camps they organise almost six or seven camps now.
